Irene Scala is third-year PhD student in Neuroscience and currently works as a consultant Neurologist in the Cerebrovascular Disease Unit at the Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta in Milan. During her sresidency, she had the opportunity to focus both her clinical and research activities on cerebrovascular diseases at a comprehensive stroke center in Rome, the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli IRCCS. She currently leads several multicenter, nationwide research projects on stroke and she is an author of more than 45 publications in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, she has partecipated as a speaker in numerous national and international conferences on stroke and neurology. Since 2022, she has served as the project manager of the “National Virtual Institute of cerebrovascular diseases”, a research initiative involving 23 Italian centers specialized in cerebrovascular disorders and sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Health. This role has enabled her to further develop strong communication and management skills within both national and international scientific communities. She is a member of the steering committee of the Young Section of the Italian Stroke Association and contributes to several international expert panels. Her current research focuses primarily on the genetic background and pathogenesis of cervical artery dissections, as well as on identifying disparities in access to acute stroke care.
