Prof. Olimpia Musumeci, MD, PhD is a Professor of Neurology at the University of Messina, Italy and Responsible of the Reference Center for Rare Neurological and Neuromuscular disorders. She graduated in Medicine from the University of Messina in 1995. In 1999 she completed her specialist training in Neurology after this, she hold her phD in Neuromuscular disorders and genetic encephaloneuromyopathies. She attended a two years postdoctoral fellowship at Department of Neurology , Columbia University in New York, USA focusing her research on neuromuscular disorders and metabolic myopathies. Her research has been focused in clinical description and characterization of patients and families with rare genetic disorders in particular mitochondrial diseases, hereditary ataxias and familial spastic paraparesis and metabolic myopathies. In the past years Ishe was involved in research projects on phenotype-genotype correlation, identification of specific biomarkers in the above rare neurological disorders She has authored several peer-reviewed publication in the above fields She has been involved in several clinical and therapeutical trial as PI on mitochondrial disorders and metabolic myopathies.
